Kindle Books on Sale During Cyber Monday Deals Week

During the week after Thanksgiving, Cyber Monday kicks off an online only sale on a variety of items including electronics, books, and more.

There is a huge sale going on this week on Kindle books in all genres.  First, there are the editor’s picks.  The one Kindle book that stood out to me in that list is The Art of Racing in the Rain.  Garth Stein writes this compelling novel from the point of view of a dog named Enzo.  Enzo sticks by his human companion, Denny, as he faces trials and triumphs in his racing career, marriage, and in other aspects of his life.

I’ve heard good things about this book, and have it downloaded and ready to read on my Kindle.  I was excited to see it as part of the sale this week.

In addition to The Art of Racing in the Rain, there is another book in the Editor’s picks called Undrunk.  It is a first hand account of what goes on behind the closed doors of an AA meeting, and the steps alcoholics have to take to remain sober.  A.J. Adams gives an honest take on his experiences and uses this book as an opportunity to explain the process to readers who have not attended AA meetings, and to dispel ugly stereotypes of Alcoholics Anonymous.  There’s also a bit of humor mixed in.  Humor is always a good thing.

Other genres include Fiction, Romance, Biography, Mystery and Thrillers, Young Adult, Health and Wellness, and Children’s books.  So, there is something for everyone.  I noticed a lot of books that put a unique spin on classics like Pride and Prejudice and Sherlock Holmes.  There are also some good cookbooks and self help books that are worth checking out.

In the Young Adult books sections there is a book called Julie of the Wolves that I remember reading back in elementary school.  It was a good book, and includes some good wolf lore.  It also deals with issues that all kids face at the adolescent stage.

In time for the holiday season, The Legend of the Candy Cane is a fun book for little kids to enjoy. It makes a great bedtime story for parents and their children.

The books I mentioned are just a small sample of the vast collection of Kindle books available. With the holidays coming up and time off from work and school, this is a great time to load up on some reading material.  All books are $3.99 or less.  The deals run until December 3rd.

Kindle on Cyber Monday: Why Kindle Wi-Fi is a good deal

This morning I spent some time thinking about recent deal that Amazon was running for 2nd generation Kindle 3G during Black Friday sale. I personally already have several Kindles in my house so I don’t need another one but I know couple of folks who were trying to get it on Black Friday and they asked my opinion about it.
My advice to them was to consider 3rd generation Kindle WiFi in their Cyber Monday shopping list (they lost in the Black Friday deal lottery). Here is the breakdown of why I think this may be reasonable even in comparison with $89 Kindle 2nd generation.

Of course $139-$89=$50 is considerable sum of money (more than 10 Starbucks caffeine shots). But in 3rd generation you will get 50% better contrast – and yes it is important since we want to keep our sight bright and healthy, aren’t we. You’ll also get more comfortable controls (this point is somewhat arguable since removal of numeric buttons wasn’t the best idea in my opinion – but not everyone uses direct page jumps feature instead of bookmarks as I do). New generation is also lighter and smaller which makes reading more comfortable.

Next I advice my friends to think about their internet access patterns. I personally access internet from free wi-fi enabled locations in 99% of cases. The remaining 1% is when my wife is shopping (could take hours) and I’m relaxing in the nearest chair browsing internet through my Kindle 3G. But even in that case 3G is not very important to have since I can read books instead of internet which is better for brain anyway :). So if my kindle suddenly lost 3G I wouldn’t be to disappointed. So if you think you will never use 3G why pay additional $189-$139=$50=10 Starbucks coffee shots for it?

Besides that I always forget to turn 3G off when I’m done and it drains battery very quickly and I have to go searching for a power cable when I’m reading the most interesting moment in the book.

Of course it is just my own opinion and I’m sure there are folks who need 3G in 30% of even 40% of time they use Kindle. But I know that there is a considerable market of those who don’t need 3G at all and that’s why Amazon actually split Kindle into two versions: Kindle WiFi and Kindle WiFi+3G.
So if you’re shopping for e-reader on Cyber Monday think twice whether you need 3G version or not…

No Kindle Deal from Amazon on Cyber Monday?

Kindle $89 deal got lots of attention on Black Friday. But the deal lasted for just several seconds and after that all available $89 Kindles were in the lucky customers shopping carts. Based on the number of negative comments which filled the internet after the deal I can guess that number of lucky customers was considerably less than those who went away from the deal page with empty hands. I guess most of those who missed the deal just went ahead with either $139 Kindle WiFi, $189 Kindle WiFi+3G, Nook or Sony Reader. Or they may just got completely disapponted with eInk based e-readers and went ahead for iPad. Who knows…

Now all excitement grows again with the arrival of Cyber Monday. I don’t expect to see mile long traffic jams and crowds rushing to the shopping malls but I can foresee internet routers getting overloaded with shoppers and e-commerce sites getting slow due to inflow of cyber shoppers. On Black Friday around 9am when $89 Kindle deal was in progress Amazon Lightning Deals page was loading very slow. I guess load time of this page could be a good measure to see how many customers are trying to see if there are any exciting deals there. This page is loading quite fast now as I’m writing this post but it is 2am Cyber Monday night time and most of Cyber Monday shoppers are still watching dreams about their tomorrow’s purchases.

Amazon has already changed their Facebook page to “Amazon Cyber Monday Deals” logo and published multiple deals there. You can see all of these deals at Amazon Cyber Monday Deals page.

I checked both Kindle WiFi and Kindle 3G pages on Amazon and they are still selling for $139 and $189 respectively. As of writing this post (Cyber Monday night 2am) I don’t see any Kindle related deals yet but they may show up later during the Cyber Monday day. But besides Kindle related deals I see lots of other Cyber Monday deals in other categories, like Electronics, Video Games, Sports, Health, Beauty and more. So it may be worthwhile to check Cyber Monday Deals and see if you can find something good there.

Since I’m a sports fan I also recommend you to check out bowlex sport equipment page on Amazon – they have quite nice discounts on some cool training equipment there.

Also I see lots of folks lining up to dance in front of the Microsoft Kinect demo booths at my local shopping mall which I guess means that Microsoft Kinect is one of the hits on both Black Friday and Cyber Monday.
